Bereavement Support
Upon the death of a parishioner, the family should contact the Secretariat Office here before making any other arrangements – booking of funeral mass/service dates and times etc.
In addition to the priests, there are also two ministries at SFA that cater to the pastoral needs of families who had lost a dear one, the Ministry of Bereavement Support and Ministry of Consolation.
The Ministry of Consolation supports the members of the bereaved family with prayerful presence and encouragement. This ministry assists in organising and leading prayer services during wakes and funerals. Click here for more info.
The Ministry of Bereavement support assists bereaved families by visitation services and providing help in terms of advice on funeral rites. Click here for more info.
What to do when death occurs:
1. Obtain a Certificate of Cause of Death (CCOD)
If the death occurs in a hospital, a doctor at the hospital can certify the cause of death and issue the CCOD. If the death occurs at home, contact your family doctor to certify the death and he will be able to issue the CCOD. If he is unable to certify the death, call the police for the body to be sent to Mortuary@HSA.
2. Engage a Catholic Funeral director.
Please refer to the Classified Advertisements of the newspapers or the Catholic News for details regarding the funeral director
3. Register the death.
The family should decide whether the body will be cremated or buried as this information is required when registering the death.
The family will have to register the death at the nearest police post or at the Registry of Births & Deaths.
