1st Sunday of Lent, Mark 1:12 – 15

Jesus' victory over the tempter in the desert anticipates victory at the Passion, the supreme act of obedience of his filial love for the Father.’ - CCC 539

Where Adam failed in resisting temptations in the garden of Eden, Jesus succeeded. Where the Israelites failed in their desert wanderings of 40 years, Jesus succeeded. Jesus shows us that we can resist the temptations of the devil.

The start of Lent prompts us to once again think and guard ourselves against the temptations and snares of the devil. Most of us start with a Lent resolution that we will either abstain or fast from something that we enjoy doing, as a sacrifice for God. However, it’s also in these times that the temptations come in fast and furious. God did not promise that we would be free of temptations after Baptism. In fact, the devil tries even harder to lure us away from God during this Lent period and after our Baptism.

Let us pray that God will send his angels to guard and protect us from the temptations of the devil today.
